TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

The Canon Powershot SD880 Digital ELPH is an ultra compact and sleek metal digi-cam. It contains a 10 megapixel sensor, a 28-112mm wise zooming lens, and an anti glare 3 inch LCD screen with an anti-scratch coating. Plus it has additional features like a face recognition system, self-timer, Servo AF, i-Contrast and also H.264 codec for movies. Image quality is very good, with a balanced colour combination and saturated hues in addition to proper white balance feature. The DIGIC 4 processor gives a 16-scene mode making it very easy to shoot in dense trees, the beach, sunlit areas and bright objects.

Another unique feature is the colour accent mode which lets you select a single colour for the images while the rest remain monochrome. The camera also takes minimal start-up time, and shutter lag is almost non-existent. However, the shot time is slightly excessive at 3.5 seconds.

The editors liked

  • Excellent LCD quality
  • Easy to handle
  • Low distortion level
  • High colour saturation
  • Good noise control till ISO 400
  • Quick and interactive
  • High quality build.

The editors didn't like

  • Red-eye problem
  • Accidental pressing of dials very often
  • Wide-angle flash system bad
  • Dynamic range of the system is limited
  • Difficult to grasp in one hand.

TestSeek's Conclusion

In spite of the camera’s bulk and the slow shot timing, the camera is a very good buy especially for beginners, and for people looking for a model that is easy to handle. It is affordable, catchy and quite fast when it comes to point-and-shoot capabilities.

  • All told, the Canon SD880 IS Digital Elph is one of the best point-and-shoot cameras we've seen in its price range. If you don't mind the extra ounces and the lack of manual functions (it is a point-and-shoot, after all), you'll be smitten with this c...

  • 28mm coverage and stabilisation, Quality 3in screen and user interface, Good face detection and focus check, H.264-encoded movies, but still VGA.
  • Little or no manual control, Modest continuous shooting of 1.4fps, No live histogram, No HD movie mode.
  • Canon’s IXUS 870IS / SD 880IS is a very enjoyable compact to use in practice. It feels good, handles quickly and takes great looking images with the minimum of fuss. Quite simply it’s very intuitive and works well without ever getting in the w...

  • Excellent photo quality for its class; optical image stabilization; pleasing interface and design; wide-angle lens.
