  • Abstract:  Forget the three grand price tag for a moment and just think about how appealing is the idea of a digital compact camera with a 35mm-sized sensor. Suddenly, the ‘sticker shock' isn't quite so severe. Report by Paul Burrows. If evidence was actually nee...

  • Compact size, Full frame sensor, Aperture ring
  • Poor battery life, Price, No touchscreen
  • Buying Guide Best compact camera Sony is very keen to prove itself as a serious player in the imaging market. It doesn't have the decades of heritage that the likes of Canon and Nikon have in the cameras world, and so it tends to pioneer technologies that...

  • The lens is as sharp as we would expect from an optic bearing the Zeiss branding. High ISO performance is excellent and image quality is very good indeed.
  • The autofocus is surprisingly slow, although accurate enough. Auto white balance is easily fooled. And the lens, generally good, shows marked barrel distortion
  • This is a very expensive camera. For this sort of money you can buy a full frame DSLR body, such as the new Sony a99. And strong competition for this camera comes from Sony's own NEX-7, a mirrorless system camera for less than half the price. It isn't ful...

  • Brilliant 24-megapixel sensor, Control scheme is simple, versatile, Amazingly small size
  • High price tag, Imperfect autofocus, Expensive accessories
  • Sony's attempt at a fixed-lens, compact-style camera in the RX1 is an excellent one. It's well on the way to being one of the best cameras we've tested in terms of image quality, and has a control scheme that's easy to understand and use manually. While t...

  • Full-frame sensor, Excellent build and design quality, Excellent image quality, Sharp lens with beautiful bokeh at wide maximum apertures,
  • Price, Slow AF performance,
  • The Sony RX1 is the best compact camera on the market, hands down. With a full-frame sensor, excellent image quality and a robust build, it's designed for the discerning photographer with very padded pockets....
