  • Fast and reliable performance; Good deinterlacing of 1080i50 and 1080i60; Seamless layer changes; 1080p24 output option for NTSC DVDs
  • No ‘force film’ mode for deinterlacing; Very basic front display; No 480i/576i output over HDMI
  • Toshiba continues to strike out on its own with startling technologies that no-one else seems to contemplate. But in addition to this, both the TV and the DVD player provided very good all-round performance.Of course, the DVD player isnt a patch on Bl...

  • Very good at upscaling DVDs
  • Only half the price of an entry-level Blu-ray player with built-in DVD upscaler, no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs
  • The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you’re certain that you don’t want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead. ...

  • Decent upscaling, Variety of connection methods, Slim profile
  • Overloaded remote control, Box has strange rattling sound?
  • Toshibas XD-E500 provides a simple way to make humble DVDs look a bit better, but dont be fooled into thinking that itll magically turn them into Blu-Ray discs. ...

  • Abstract:  If there is one product that will help push down the cost of Blu-ray players, it’s the new Toshiba upscaler that coverts traditional DVDs to 1080p HD. And at only $199 this little beast is set to be a real irritant up against Blu-ray devices that in s...

  • Toshiba’s HD-DVD players may have lost the HD format war, but the company’s outstanding up-scaling tech lives on in this smart DVD player. As well as upping the resolution to Full HD, the E500 gives a further boost to either detail (sharpening...
  • Toshiba’s so focused on the future it’s forgotten that some of us still watch plain old 4:3 format discs. If you’ve got any old TV shows on DVD, the Tosh can’t upscale them without stretching them to fit widescreen – you&rsqu...
  • DVD has more lives than a motorway-crossing, chainsaw-juggling cat. The E500 revitalises your digital movie collection once more, giving colour, contrast and especially detail a next-generation pick-me-up. Best offers for the Toshiba XD-E500Bargain Sto...

  • Picture quality; sound; holds its own against other upscaling players
  • It's expensive for a DVD player; a pain to use with certain TVs
  • This is a decent upscaling DVD player that can breathe extra life into your DVD collection. The problem is, it's rather a pain to use at times, and if you own a 32-inch 1080p Philips TV you're going to be bang out of luck with it ...

  • ‘Sharp’ mode offers incredibly detailed pictures, naturally vibrant colours, smooth, stable motion, nice styling
  • Sound could do with just a little more refinement
